I'm sure this book belongs in the top 3 of similar..
I own a lot of hiking books.. especially books about hiking in the N.W. They have all been decent but this book has amazing colored maps, very detailed trail descriptions and a great section about the geology in the N.W. I would recommend this to anyone who would like to add a great hiking book to their collection.
I love hiking but I hate it when trail maps are wrong. Being misdirected is annoying and getting lost can be seriously dangerous. That's why I really like this book...it's accurate and easy to use. The graphics are extremely helpful to plan where to hike. It has statistics like distance, difficulty and features, etc. I especially love the pictures of this northwestern rainforest region and it's not too big to fit in a backpack. Well worth the price and essential part of the gear!
I truly have no need for yet another hiking guide, but I simply had to have this one and I have purchased several as gifts for friends who also have plenty of trail guides. This book focuses on quality not quantity, and the 25 hikes the author has chosen are a well rounded bunch that display the best of our part of the Pacific Northwest.
I read the book from cover to cover when I got it home, a first for me with a book of this type. I enjoyed the beautiful photos of places I've already been and checked off a few new hikes that I don't want to miss this summer.
The guide contains all of the essentials including fees/permits required, best season, hike statistics, etc. Where it stands alone is the simple beauty of design and multitude of color photos. The trail map for each hike takes up an entire 8.5" x 8.5" page and is the best I've seen in any guidebook. I like to scan and print trail maps for day hikes and usually have to find a couple to get all of the info I want, and these maps have it all in wonderfully clear detail.
I very much appreciate that the author has included a page about the hikers code of responsibility and leave no trace. This is essential information for new hikers and a good reminder for experienced ones. There is also an informative page of tips regarding gear, navigation, and nutrition.
All in all, a truly wonderful book!
This book is great! Love the full-color photos and informative maps! My only wish for this book is that there was more!
