They set out for Aspen in 1985. A one year post-graduation detour to play in the Rockies prior to entering the “real world.” That was the plan. They wouldn’t need much. Just ordinary jobs with a ski pass attached, a one-bedroom apartment, and each other. But tempted by the decadent side of this iconic resort town, Alex Cavanaugh enters into an illicit agreement with a new acquaintance and finds himself on a remote forest trail, where the crime he is committing pales in comparison to the one his path will cross, leading him further into the darkness of the mountains, and the human soul.

I debated whether to give this 3 or 4 stars, so I guess I'd give it 3.5 stars. Once it got going, the book really held my attention. (I almost put the book down while reading the initial chapters due to the overuse of sentence fragments. This seemed to resolve as the book progressed.) The author did a terrific job of creating suspense in certain parts, but I felt let down when this wasn't maintained in other parts and occasionally the protagonist made decisions in which he seemed "to dumb to live." However, the author did an incredible job of creating realistic sociopaths of the worst kind! It's not easy weaving different points of view (POV) to weave different story lines, but the author did a good job overall. Perhaps that's why it was a jolt in one later chapter when a first-person POV character suddenly became a third-person POV character only to switch back to first-person POV in subsequent chapters. Also, I felt parts of the story resolved a bit too easily. During a discussion of the book, those in attendance tended to either love the ending or really disliked it. I was among those who didn't like it. Howe shows a lot of promise, so although I couldn't call Into the Roaring Fork a great book, I'll definitely give his next book a try!Product details

Into the Roaring Fork edition by Jeff Howe Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I gave it to my daughter to read (a birthday present). She liked it very much and will give it to me to read. She lives in Albuquerque and has had first hand experience with wild fires and their destructiveness. She and her husband have a cabin in the mountains in South Fork, CO. She thought it was an excellent book, especially for a first time author.
Interesting story and I liked hearing about the various characters throughout the chapter changes. It kept me wondering what was going to happen next and I still would like to see even more into the main character's future.
Into the Roaring Fork was an excellent book with many surprises to keep me on the edge of my seat. The writing style was different from what I am used to, which was difficult to get used to, but ultimately it made sense given the plot of the book. The digital copy had a different version than what my library provided. I much prefer the new ending that the digital copy provides. Cannot wait to read Jeff's next book!
It's difficult to believe that this is a debut novel. I was plodding through Robert Galbraith's Career of Evil when I picked this up for my book club. Wow! What a pleasant surprise. This book reads like a James Patterson; it just moves right along. The plot is fast-paced, and the characters are well developed. If you read a lot and the books all seem to run together in your mind after a while, that will not be the case with Into the Roaring Fork. This is one that's going to stick with you for a while. I can't wait to see what the future brings from Mr. Howe.
From the 1st page, this book had me in it's grip. Although not personally, I can relate to the main character (Alex) since I've had a few friends who headed to Colorado in the 1980s with not much more than the shirt on their back and the dream of skiing fresh powder six month a year. They could easily have fallen into the same mischief as Alex. My point here is the story is very realistic and could happen to anyone who's out to make a quick buck to help get settled in the ski areas of Colorado.
I found the book easy to read and it flowed nicely. I understand that a newer edition has a different ending which would make it an even better read. Looking forward to Howe's next offering.
I enjoyed this first novel by Jeff Howe. i have relatives who live in the Basalt/Carbondale area which made it personally interesting to me. I live in Cincinnati, as does Jeff, and I learned of his novel from the local paper. One of the other reviewers mentioned the phrase use. That was obvious from the start and I'm not sure why authors use them in lieu of sentences. It was annoying. The book did hold my attention throughout. I've read well written novels which did not.
A fantastic read! It was fast-paced and kept you engaged. It was hard not to keep reading the next chapter. I enjoyed the author's phrasing - it reminded me of the great film noir dialogue - sharp, descriptive and kept the pace moving. I thought the character's choices throughout the story were grounded in sense of reality and not contrived to move towards a pre-determined outcome. This may not be an author you are familiar with, but I would highly recommend giving it a read. I am hoping he comes out with another book.
