This is one of my favorite genres, but I am really struggling with this series. The writing is choppy and that makes it difficult to follow at times. I feel like the author knows where she wants the story to go, but forgets to take the reader along with her and so there are pieces missing. Also, I want the secondary characters to fully develop and they still haven’t gotten there for me. This story could be really good, if it were developed a little more. I will read the last book when it comes out because I received the first two free and I am already invested in the story, but I don’t have high hopes.Tags : Surrounded By Flames (The Flames Trilogy) (Volume 2) [Cassandra Fear] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Surrounded By Flames The Flames Trilogy Volume 2 Cassandra Fear 9781640340503 Books Reviews
I’m normally not a fan of the paranormal, but this book and its predecessor “Above the Flames” have both captured my interest. I found this book a real page turner as Ms Fear masterfully spins a fascinating plot about a handful of young adults, with superhuman powers, try to save the world from demons are trying to destroy all humanity. It’s well done with some great twists in the plot that will make the reader need to read on. Ordinarily, however, sequels should be able to work as a stand alone novel. This one, however, requires a reading of the first novel to know what is happening. There are also a lot of clichés that tend t take the reader out of the story. Overall, I would recommend this book 4-stars.
Amazing book!! Cassandra doesn't disappoint, you've got action throughout the whole book.
I was teary at one point ( I won't say where lol ) and you can easily get into the book.
Thanks for writing! <3
NOTE I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
To be perfectly honest, this book was just as hard to get into for me as the last book was. In many cases, so much was going on within a short time frame that it was hard to keep up with the story at times. Don’t get me wrong; the premise never lost its intrigue. However, I find myself rating this book three out of five stars, like the last one, and here’s why.
I guess my main problem throughout this book, which was a reoccurring problem with the last one as well, is that Fear tends to just launch the reader smack in the middle of critical plot points rather than steadily building up to them through the creation of suspense. I noticed this as early as the first chapter when Jasmine’s mom calls her, and soon afterwards, Bael takes over the conversation with the news that he has her mom and that she has five days to meet him at her old place of residence or else. Where’s the suspense? Where are the events that happened leading up to that moment? Furthermore, this was even more prominent when (SPOILER ALERT) Jasmine finds out she is half-angel and half-demon soon after her mom dies by Bael’s hand (even though she had arrived with two days to spare). Even though I am sure this wasn’t Fear’s intention, it just came across to me as her randomly inserting a plot device into the story to help explain things that couldn’t be explained before. That doesn’t even account for the fact that throughout the novel, Bael continues to pursue and try to capture Jasmine, and judging by how all the other attempts within the first novel went, those parts were very predictable for me.
However, I will say that one of the redeeming qualities of this book was that ending. It was, in all honesty, the least-predictable for me throughout the entire book, and it was one of the only times I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat, pushing myself to read more even though my tired eyes screamed at me in protest. No, I will not spoil the ending in this review (even though I kind of spoiled a little bit of the beginning of the book, but that’s beside the point). However, because of the unpredictability of it, that part, that battle, was probably thus far my favorite part of the series, and the last chapter especially was extremely sad and left me begging for more. Even though most of this series, for the most part, was okay for me, the ending of the second book has left me highly anticipating the third book, for I am intrigued to see how the trilogy will end.
Overall, I would still recommend this book despite the major flaw I listed above, and I will be reading anything Fear produces in the future.
This book was a great 2nd....it held ny attention that carried over from thr first...can't wait for book 3. )
This sequel does not disappoint. I would even argue it was better than book one. It's chalk full of suspense, twists, and turns. It was a fun read and I am patiently waiting for the final installment.
I can't wait for the last book in this trilogy. I never knew what would happen. It certainly kept me interested. Finished this in 1 day just couldn't put it down.
I have read both books now by this author and I love this series! I read the first book in 9 hours and this book took me a little less than that. Loved the story line and can't wait for the 3rd in this trilogy. This book kept my interest throughout the entire story. Great read and would recommend to everyone! Great job Cassandra!
